About the ALS Society and Walk:
Every year, volunteers from all around the province team up with the ALS Society of BC to organize and lead a WALK for ALS in their city. This year, there will be 14 WALKS across BC.
Leading up to the event, walkers collect pledges from family, friends, and colleagues who wish to sponsor them. On the day of the WALK, participants enjoy various activities organized by the volunteers and fellowship.
“The WALK for ALS across Canada is the signature event to raise awareness and funds for patient services for people living with ALS, and to support the Canadian ALS Research Program. The impact is twofold; aside from raising funds and awareness, this event empowers people affected by ALS – the patients, families, friends, caregivers, and health care professionals. This empowers them to take back some pf what ALS has taken away,” says Wendy Toyer, Executive Director of the ALS Society of BC.
Proceeds from the WALKS for ALS go to provide direct support programs for people living with ALS, their families and caregivers; and to invest in the Canadian ALS Research Program whose goal is to make ALS a treatable disease.
About Amyotrophic Lateral SclerosisAmyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a rapidly progressive, neuromuscular disease. It attacks the motor neurons that transmit electrical impulses from the brain to the voluntary muscles in the body. When they fail to receive messages, the muscles lose strength, atrophy and die. ALS can strike anyone at any time, regardless of age, gender, or ethnic origin. It does not affect the senses, and only rarely does it affect the mind.
About ALS Society of BC
The ALS Society of BC raises funds for research, and to provide direct support to ALS patients, and their families and caregivers. Until a cure is found, the Society provides patient services to improve the quality of life of those living this disease by offering an extensive equipment loan program, support services and educational materials.
