Amidst the tense backdrop of Soviet Russia, Shostakovich wrote his Fifth Symphony, an enigmatic and remarkably ironic work. It appeased state censors, who found in it all the ideals of Socialist Realism, while covertly mocking them. 2015 Honens Laureate Luca Buratto’s “fiery imagination and finesse” pair perfectly with Rachmaninoff’s thrilling and passionate Second Piano Concerto.
