We Scare Hunger 2017
Event EndedSt. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School hosts an annual campaign every Halloween in which hundreds of volunteers collect canned goods from the local community to donate to the Neighbour 2 Neighbour Centre. Neighbour 2 Neighbour Centre aids and supports over 6000 residents in Hamilton, almost half of those being children. The goal to alleviate and prevent poverty in our community is a common vision shared between the volunteers at the Neighbour 2 Neighbour Center, The WE Scare Hunger Committee, the student volunteers at St. Thomas More, and the Hamilton community.
This upcoming Tuesday October 31, 2017, we will be hosting our 18th annual We Scare Hunger Campaign (formerly known as Halloween for Hunger) in our school cafeteria. Our Executive Team has already begun planning and organizing the necessary details to make this even a great success! With over 75 student planning committee members and hundreds of volunteers, we are determined to ensure that our campaign is a success. Last year, our goal was to collect 100,000 pounds of canned goods and non-perishable food items. Although this campaign was successful in gathering an substantial amount of canned goods, we are still determined to reach our goal! According to The WE Foundation, our campaign accounted for 1/3 of all We Scare Hunger campaign proceeds over North America. Members of our Executive Team were featured on Much Music’s event WE Day in 2013; consequently our event is now recognized both locally and nationally. The We Scare Hunger Campaign at St. Thomas More is the 2nd largest one-day foods drive in Canada! This year we plan to canvas over 25,000 homes on the West and Central Hamilton Mountain. If we meet this year’s goal of 100,000 pounds, we will have collected over 800,000 pounds since our first campaign 18 years ago.
