Exhibition Opening: WARP & WEFT (A retrospective textile exhibition by Kaija Sanelma Harris)

The Saskatchewan Craft Council is pleased to announce WARP & WEFT, an installation of weavings and tapestries created by the extraordinary Finnish-Canadian artist Kaija Sanelma Harris.  Warp & Weft is a collaborative exhibition presented between two venues: Saskatchewan Craft Council Gallery and Remai Modern.

Kaija Sanelma Harris (nee Lehtimaki) was born in Finland in 1939, Kaija was surrounded by accomplished textile workers throughout her life, notably her biological and foster mothers.  Upon moving to Saskatchewan, Kaija developed a deep love for the sky, land, growth, as well as the prairie light, which is reflected in her work.  The impact of Kaija’s technical skill, use of colour, innovation in technique and interpretation of nature, have created a long-lasting legacy that has significantly contributed to the Saskatchewan art and craft community.  In recognition of the complementary missions of the two organizations, the Saskatchewan Craft Council’s exhibition highlights the creative, personal, and technical shifts in Kaija’s extraordinary work, while Remai Modern’s exhibition will situate her within the context of visual art history.  Both venues include works from all decades of Harris’ career, as well as preparatory drawings, fibre studies, and archival materials.

OPENING CELEBRATION DETAILS:  An opening reception will be held at the SASKATCHEWAN CRAFT COUNCIL GALLERY on OCTOBER 19th @12:00noon, followed by a curator’s talk in REMAI MODERN’S MARQUEE GALLERY @3:00pm.  Everyone is welcome to attend both events.  Transportation between venues will be available.
