HILARY JOHNSTONE’S history as a painter informs her intimate, dynamic textile pieces. Living in LaRonge, Saskatchewan, Johnstone encountered the work of award-winning textile artist Martha Cole in the mid-2000’s-Johnstone was inspired by the texture, softness, and warmth of fibre. Johnstone writes that she appreciates the insulating qualities of fabric – how it warms a room, softens sound, and brings us into familiar places. She began working with fabrics, relying on her extensive skill in colour theory, composition, and sketching to create her works. Visually, Johnstone presents us with an intimate perspective of the Saskatchewan boreal forest. These unique representations of nature provide us with a way to extend our own understanding and relationship to the shorelines, forests, and skies of Saskatchewan.
