Mental Health Awareness Movement#YEGmentalhealth is an initiative and campaign to raise awareness for mental health that is being organized by Bonnie Doon Centre and UrbanYEG. In addition to the mental health aspect, another reason why this campaign is so important is that we are trying to bring together our local community to do something incredible: raise awareness for mental health, connect people within our community and raise funds for Momentum Walk-In Counselling. We hope through this campaign that we can show everyone that amazing things can happen when local groups, volunteers and organizations can come together to collaborate. This kind of collaboration and desire to have people within our community contribute to do something great is part of what we want to develop and create a movement with it - #YEGmovement. Between April 29th through May 27th, Bonnie Doon Centre will be hosting a Pop-Up Art Gallery in which local artists will have their artwork featured and all are for sale. Each of them have committed to donating 20% of all sales proceeds directly to Momentum Walk-In Counselling! This is not only a great way to showcase local talent and give artists an opportunity to share and sell their artwork, but we are so thrilled to have so many artists reach out to us wanting to participate to do this to raise awareness and support mental health! On May 6th, from 11:30-1PM, we will be having an official Art Gallery Reception at Bonnie Doon. This is an opportunity for our community to meet the artists to view and discuss their work, to learn more about the #YEGmentalhealthcampaign, and to connect with other guests. There will be food and drinks and prizes! Everyone is welcome to attend! Over 40 people within our community have volunteered to contribute their time to help make the Pop-Up Art Gallery possible and that is in addition to the artists that are involved in the Art Gallery itself. On May 27th, we will be wrapping up the campaign with a special party at Bonnie Doon Centre that will be filled with an afternoon of fun things to do, we will have some guest speakers, a special presentation to winners of a Photobook Contest that UrbanYEG ran, and plenty of ways for you to help contribute and donate to Momentum Walk-In Counselling! Stay tuned for more details on this event. About UrbanYEG: UrbanYEG was founded in March 2015 on Instagram as a way to promote the work of local photographers in Edmonton. Chan Rin, the Founder, saw the need to make it more than just an Instagram account and UrbanYEG has since evolved to focus on connecting local creatives and provide a platform that allows for a supportive community that encourages creatives to be the best version of themselves, to tap into their creative aptitude, to help others reach their success, and inspire them to make their community better by being a contributor. In addition, UrbanYEG has rallied together beyond Instagram to provide mentorship in photography, raise awareness about mental health issues, and volunteer for such organizations as Ronald McDonald House, Ribbon Rouge, HIV Edmonton, and Edmonton Public Schools. In September of 2016, UrbanYEG was formally recognized by the City of Edmonton at City Hall for outstanding community work for connecting local creatives and their efforts to raise awareness for mental health. Since 2016, UrbanYEG has held two major events that saw local creatives being connected with each other, showcased local talent, and raised money for Momentum Walk-In Counselling. One of the best things about UrbanYEG is that the group is completely run by volunteers who do it to give back to their community. About Bonnie Doon Centre: Bonnie Doon Centre is situated on 22 acres of land in the south east end of the city at the crossroads of 82nd avenue and 83rd street. The centre reinforced its commitment as the very heart of the 19 distinctly separate communities surrounding this busy centre. Our mission is to offer our customers not only the convenience of all services under one roof but also a high level of customer service along with creating a unique experience for our customers through the events we host to bring the community and people together to have a good time. We value the voice and opinion of our customers and are always working on environmentally sustainable ways to operate the Centre for our green initiatives. About Momentum Walk-In Counselling: Momentum is a mental health triage centre, helping individuals who cannot pay for or wait for aid through the traditional health care system. We are a non profit, walk-in agency providing support and guidance to people in need of counselling services. Momentum is staffed by a team of volunteer, Registered Health Professionals who collaborate to provide clients Single Session Therapy solutions. We invite you to comment below with a quote or inspirational message to help raise awareness for mental health. We will be distributing letters around the city with the comments and quotes to spread positivity & your comment below will be part of the letter distribution! Don't forget to use the #YEGmentalhealth and #yegmovement in the comments as well! We will also be accepting letters that are dropped off at customer service until May 18th. Be sure to use the #YEGmentalhealth and #yegmovement to show your support in raising awareness for mental health! ♥ There will be more details about the May 27th event to follow.OtherMay 27
