City living, rural escapes

Despite being the 2nd largest nation on Earth, Canadians still largely tend to prefer living in urban areas over a more rural lifestyle.

According to the 2011 Census, 81 per cent of Canadians live within an urban area, a complete reversal from a century ago.  In fact, those living in Canada’s three largest urban areas, Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver account for 35 per cent of our entire population.

The end result of this preference to live in urban centres is that our cities are vibrant, diverse and amongst the most exciting and desirable to live in anywhere in the world.  At the same time though, with so much of our country left relatively unspoiled, those who still enjoy the natural wonders of this land have an almost unlimited amount of opportunities to choose from when looking to get away.

Most of Canada’s major urban centres are located within a short driving distance of spectacular countryside and rural escapes.  Someone living in Vancouver, for example is only about 2 hours away from Whistler’s wondrous natural beauty. Calgarians can similarly be on the doorsteps of majestic Banff National Park in about the same amount of time.  Head north from Toronto, Canada’s largest city and in less than 3 hours you hit the serenity of Muskoka and the Canadian Shield.  Montrealers are only 2 hours away from the Laurentian Mountains and beautiful escapes like Mont Tremblant.  Even Atlantic Canadians, such as those living in Halifax can be taking in the world famous Cabot Trail within only a few hours’ drive.

The fact that so many Canadians live in urban areas, but also love to leave the city to enjoy our spectacular countryside presents unique design challenges for automakers.  More and more, Canadians want to drive vehicles that allow them to have fun be it inside or outside of city limits.  The new XV Crosstrek CUV from Subaru Canada is one vehicle that was specifically designed to meet this unique combination of needs.
