Z Gallery Arts presents Finnish artist Henni Alftan’s first North American solo exhibition, Shadows in the Mirror, April 6 – May 8, 2017. This exclusive, oil-on-canvas collection offers an alluring, poetic lexicon of the everyday. Alftan’s exquisite, figurative paintings of real life scenes and objects incite the viewer to take a deeper look at the seemingly mundane to find something rich, and nuanced. Be among the first to see this brand new series from Alftan whose immense body of works have been displayed across Europe in collections at Finland’s Amos Anderson Art Museum, Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art, and The Helsinki Art Museum, among others.

Vancouver TheatreSports’™ improvisers will demonstrate their lightning fast wit as they play the ‘Hosts’ to our audience ‘Guests’ in Western World – an improvised parody inspired by the popular TV series Westworld. Opens April 6 and runs through to May 13, 2017 Each night features a totally new ‘episode’ under the watchful eye and guiding mind of Robert (sometimes Roberta) Ford. Guests begin their Western World adventure with an orientation. “Who are these hosts? What roles do they play?” are just some of the many questions that only VTSL’s esteemed Guests can answer. Throughout the show Guests help craft the storyline that becomes the basis for the second half of the show. In this artificial world of improvised comedy anything can, and will, happen. If things get too out of hand, Ford can always step in with “Stop all motor functions” and hit the reset button. Even if you have never seen Westworld, VTSL’s Western World will be filled with enough western movie clichés and quick-thinking action to ensure an evening of ‘laughs without limits.’

Carolyn’s inspiration is taken from the incredible beauty of the Okanagan Valley. She especially loves to paint trees, vineyards and flowers. Working with acrylics & watercolour, she has added encaustic medium into her creations. Encaustic is the ancient art of painting with molten beeswax & pigments. It allows for more spontaneity & wonderful surprises as the melted wax moves around the painting. Indian Music Festival is happening on April 29th (sat), May 7th (Sun) and May 14th (Sun). Its a Classical Music Extravaganza brought to Vancouver, the artist are from India and some of them artist are decorated as Grammy Nominated Artist. Now in its fifth year, the rEvolver Theatre Festival is Vancouver’s late spring celebration of Canadian contemporary performance work by emerging and early mid career artists. This year’s slate of adventurous, high energy and sophisticated new works includes productions by Luciterra Dance Company, Ode. Movements Society, rice & beans theatre, Skinny Walrus Project, and Wild Women Theatre—all locally based. Highlights also include The Princess Show, a co-production by Heist and Theatre Outré from Halifax, which won Best in Fest award at the 2016 Atlantic Fringe Festival. Toronto-based Haley McGee, brings her one-woman show, I’m Doing This for You. Ramshackle Theatre from Whitehorse presents Tombstone, a visually stunning all-ages cardboard puppet show and live movie.

Aspiring playwrights are encouraged to enter the Ryga Festival's 10-Minute Play Contest, which is accepting entries until May 31. The 10-minute play can be about any subject, but must be new and original work. There are cash prizes for the top three plays (first prize, $100) and winning plays will be performed at a showcase during the Ryga Festival in Summerland, Sept 1-4, 2017. There are categories for adults, 18 years and up, and for youth, under 18. Deadline for submitting the play is May 31, 2017 and winners will be announced around July 15, 2017. Writers must reside within the geographical area of the Okanagan Regional Library System, which extends from Princeton in the south to Golden in the north. The Vancouver Asian Heritage Month Society (VAHMS) and the Vancouver Lipont Art Centre are pleased to present Generation One Art Exhibition during the 21st annual explorASIAN festival, which promotes national Asian Heritage Month in May. The Generation One Art Exhibition was created in 2009 as a signature program of the VAHMS festival to feature both established and emerging local artists, who are first-generation Asian Canadians by immigration or birth, and to provide a forum for exploring new expressions of Canadian identity. This year, the exhibition will focus on issues of social integration facing Asian Canadians of various generations.
