In Toronto, a shrinking number of young job seekers are finding work, diminishing the odds they'll see more gainful employment down the road. "The longer you don’t work the harder you are to hire,” says one expert.

Rates of Toronto students reporting they are helped by private tutors have grown by 60% over the last five years, Toronto school board data shows. 8% of students in grades 7 and 8 reported a private tutor in 2011, as opposed to 5% in 2006. Tutoring rates for high school students rose from 7% to 11% in the same period.

This exclusive dissection of survey responses from tens of thousands of Toronto students began nine months ago, when Global News requested school-by-school results from the student census in July of last year, using access-to-information laws. That data was eventually delivered, as a set of 318 .pdf files, in February of this year.
