Stanley Park’s Beaver Lake could disappear by 2020

One of Stanley Park’s natural wonders is quickly filling in with sediment and could disappear by 2020.

Beaver Lake is shrinking and the City of Vancouver wants to know what you think should be done.

The city says clear cut logging; construction of the causeway, trails and a small dam on Beaver Creek; and invasive plant species are contributing to the situation facing Beaver Lake.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

During the summer months, only a few patches of open water remain, with much of the lake’s original 6.7-hectare area covered by weed mats.

In April, the City of Vancouver hired a environmental consultant to determine how to restore the lake.

A series of open houses are being held this month to determine the best way to proceed.
