Used syringes alert issued to health regions in Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan government issues alert to health regions after toddler pricked by used syringes in Outlook hospital. File / Global News

SASKATOON – An alert is going out to all Saskatchewan health regions about how to deal with needles after a toddler put her hands into a pail with used syringes at a hospital.

Petrina Kuzyk says her 19-month-old daughter was pricked with some needles in the emergency room in Outlook, south of Saskatoon, last Friday.

Health Minister Dustin Duncan says the regions are being told to make sure all facilities are following the rules for proper disposal.

Duncan says an expedited investigation could take about a week and the audit results should take about 30 days.

Kuzyk says Janaeya discovered the yellow hazardous-waste bucket on the bottom of a cart near the bed while she and a nurse were busy with her older daughter.

There were small nicks on both of the girl’s palms, as well as a scratch and what appeared to be a small puncture mark on her right wrist.

The family spent the rest of the day at a hospital in Saskatoon, where Janaeya got the first of several Hepatitis B shots and started a month-long course of drugs to prevent infections, such as HIV.
