Fifth suspect sought in jewel heist

MONTREAL – A fifth man is sought by Montreal police in an armed robbery at a Pointe Claire jewellery store where seven people were hospitalized after they were exposed to pepper spray.

Holder Laporte, 21, of St. Laurent, faces 10 counts related to the July 24 heist at the Birks store in the Fairview Mall.

Five robbers stormed into the boutique just before 11 a.m. that Saturday and doused employees and patrons with pepper spray.

The robbers then smashed glass display counters, grabbed several items and made off with what police described as a "considerable amount" of jewellery. Steven Joseph, 19, of Laval, was arrested the next day at his parents’ home after investigators traced the licence plate of a car allegedly used as a getaway vehicle.

Three more arrests followed last week.

Laporte is wanted in at least four other criminal cases, including one involving cocaine trafficking charges, where he pleaded guilty but failed to show up for a sentencing hearing at the Montreal courthouse in June.

Laporte is described as black, 5 feet 10 inches tall, and 140 pounds.
