EDMONTON – It happens every year, but it seems as though it never gets any easier to deal with the first major snowfall of the season.

Environment Canada is predicting up to 20 centimetres of the white stuff could fall in central Alberta over the weekend.

“I think it’s going to be the one that winters in a large portion of central Alberta,” said Environment Canada Meteorologist Dan Kulak.

“We’re still deciding on where the boundaries for this system are going to be; how far north and how far south that really heavy band of snow is. And a difference of 100 kilometres is going to make the difference between probably no snow and 20 plus centimetres.

“Edmonton itself has been sort of on the edge of the heavier part of the precipitation. Some of the guides that we’ve had in the last few days has been pushing the precipitation into Edmonton and some of the latest stuff maybe just a little bit south of Edmonton. So certainly, it’s waffling. We have the potential of anywhere between two and 20 plus (centimetres) depending on exactly where the storm goes.”

Kulak says the low pressure system is expected to start as rain Saturday afternoon and turn into snow sometime Saturday evening.

“Once that starts it’s not going to let up probably until sometime Monday morning. So all of Sunday is basically snow outside.”

Kulak says temperatures are also going to dip to below than normal daytime highs for the majority of next week.

“With November upon us, once we get some snow on the ground, temperatures are often a lot cooler than many people would expect and they cool off fairly rapidly,” he explained. “Normal for this time of year is daytime highs of about three (degrees celsius) or so. We’ll be looking at temperatures, I think, zero or a little bit below zero for daytime highs and then somewhat cooler than that for overnight lows.”

So basically, get your shovels ready!

“Don’t be standing out at the store trying to look for one on Sunday morning,” Kulak added with a laugh.

A snowfall warning is in effect for much of central Alberta, including the City of Edmonton. For the latest information, visit Environment Canada’s website.
