TORONTO — Veteran actress Andrea Martin has signed on to star in the new Canadian comedy series Working the Engels.
The 12-episode series, written by Katie Ford (Miss Congeniality) and Jane Ford (Material World), is set to begin production in Toronto this fall.
The half-hour comedy will air on Global.
“I am so looking forward to shooting another TV series in Canada and working with Katie and Jane Ford – I have been an admirer of theirs for years,” Martin said, in a news release. “And to get to stay in Toronto for an extended period is icing on the cake. I couldn’t feel luckier or more excited. It’s going to be a great show and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”
The U.S.-born actress, who lives in New York, is best known to Canadian audiences for being a part of the SCTV cast in the late ’70s and early ’80s.
In Working the Engels, Martin will play matriarch Celia, described as a woman “who mixes both momma bear motherly love and myopic self-involvement.”
The series follows a family that takes over their father’s storefront law firm following his death — even though only one of them is a lawyer.
Martin, 66, recently won a Tony Award for her role in the Broadway revival of Pippin.
