Lea Michele, ‘Glee’ co-stars remember Cory Monteith at Teen Choice Awards

TORONTO — Canadian actor Cory Monteith was honoured Sunday at the Teen Choice Awards by his Glee co-stars.

Monteith’s girlfriend and co-star Lea Michele made her first public appearance since the actor’s July 13th death in Vancouver to accept the Choice TV Actress: Comedy award.

“I just wanted to be here today to personally thank all of you and tell everyone out there how much all of your love and support has meant to me over these past very difficult few weeks,” Michele said, as tears filled her eyes.

“I wanted to dedicate this award to Cory for all of you out there who loved and admired Cory as much as I did. I promise that we’re going to get through this together.”

Michele added: “He was very special to me and also to the world and we were very lucky to witness his incredible talent, his handsome smile and his beautiful, beautiful heart. So whether you knew him personally or just as Finn Hudson, Cory reached out and he became a part of all of our hearts and that is where he will stay forever.”

Earlier, cast members were emotional as they dedicated the Choice TV Show: Comedy award to the fans on behalf of the late actor.

“We lost someone that we really love and that all of you guys love too,” said Amber Riley. “Cory was like a brother to us and like a dad and he was always ready to sign an autograph or take a picture with a fan. He loves you Gleeks and he loves you fans.”

Glee also earned awards for TV Male Scene Stealer (Chord Overstreet) and TV Breakout Star (Blake Jenner).

The Teen Choice Awards started with screams and groans — screams for the opening performance by British group One Direction and groans for an off-colour One Direction joke by actress Rebel Wilson.

Accepting her award for Choice Movie Actress: Comedy (for Pitch Perfect), Wilson told the young audience: “You know what’s weird is that when I found out that there was a band called One Direction… because that’s the name I gave my a******.”

The comment was cut from the broadcast.

Wilson’s Pitch Perfect co-stars Skyler Astin and Adam Devine were named Choice Movie Actor: Comedy and Choice Movie Villain respectively. The movie won for Choice Movie Comedy.

One Direction, who kicked the show off with “Best Song Ever,” was named Choice Music Group, Tour, Single by a Group and Love Song.

Canada’s Justin Bieber, who was not at the show, won Choice Male Artist, Choice Single: Male Artist (“Beauty and a Beat”) and Choice Twitter Personality.

Bieber’s ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez picked up the award for Choice Break-Up Song for her single “Come and Get It.” She said: “It’s an encouraging song so I’m glad everyone is responding really well to it.”

Gomez was also named Choice Music Star and Choice Female Hottie.

With her father Billy Ray Cyrus watching from the front row, Miley Cyrus won both Choice Summer Song (“We Can’t Stop”) and Choice TV Scene Stealer (Two and a Half Men). She was also honoured for being a fashion trendsetter.

Bruno Mars, who accepted via video message, received Choice Summer Music Star: Male and Choice R&B Artist.

Emblem3 was named Choice Breakout Group and Ed Sheeran was chosen as Breakout Music Artist.

L.L. Cool J from NCIS: Los Angeles was named Choice TV Actor: Action.

Jim Parsons said it was exciting and touching to accept the Choice TV Actor: Comedy award for playing Sheldon Cooper on Big Bang Theory.

Logan Lerman accepted the prize for Choice Movie Actor: Drama for The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which also won Choice Movie: Drama.

The Choice Summer Movie Star: Female was Sandra Bullock, who also won Choice Movie Chemistry with Melissa McCarthy for their movie The Heat.

Toronto-raised Nina Dobrev presented the Choice Rock Group award to Paramore, who performed on the show.

The Choice Female Athlete honour went to Gabby Douglas.

Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers received the Inspire Award for his work raising funds and awareness about diabetes and Ashton Kutcher was presented with the Ultimate Award.

“Let’s be brutally honest, this is the old guy award,” Kutcher said on stage, before taking a serious tone.

He spoke about working a series of regular jobs while growing up. “I’ve never had a job in my life that I was better than. I was always just lucky to have a job and every job I had was a stepping stone to my next job. I never quit my job until I had another job. So opportunities looked a lot like work.”

More than 150 million votes were cast online. The winners of the Inspire, Ultimate and Fashion Trendsetter awards were chosen by the show’s producers.
