UPDATE: Magnitude 5.0 earthquake reported off the coast of Vancouver Island

TORONTO – There has been a magnitude 5.0 earthquake off the shore of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Natural Resources Canada picked up an automatic detection of a magnitude 4.4 earthquake at 5:57 PDT and then upgraded it to 5.5 an hour later. No tsunami warnings have been issued.

Each year the Geological Survey of Canada records more than 1000 earthquakes in western Canada. The Pacific Coast is the most prone to earthquakes in the region.

The offshore region of Vancouver has experienced more than 100 earthquakes of magnitude 5 or higher over the last 70 years.
