TORONTO – A black food craze has taken Tokyo by storm after a local restaurant introduced a 30 centimetre hot dog that looks like it has been left on the grill a little too long.

According to reports, the buns and meat are infused with edible bamboo charcoal powder, a food dye used throughout Asia.

The Black Terra Hot Dog of Vegas Premium Hot Dogs in Akihabara introduced its black sausage, which is encased in a black bun, to compete with the success of Burger King’s “Kuro Burger” (black burger).

The Kuro Burger was launched in September 2012 to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Burger King’s return to Japan.

The burger features black buns and black ketchup made from squid ink.
