Edmonton father sentenced in child pornography case

EDMONTON – A 34-year-old Edmonton father has been sentenced in a child pornography case involving his daughter. She is six now but was an infant at the time.

On Tuesday, the father sat stonefaced inside an Edmonton courtroom as he learned his fate.

The offender, who can’t be named, pleaded guilty in May to four charges: sexual touching of someone under 16, as well as making, distributing, and possessing child pornography.

The judge called the actions “repugnant to all civilized people…These offences required planning and deliberation.”

According to details of the case laid out in the agreed statement of facts, the abuse started when the victim was between three and six months old. A police investigation found 13 inappropriate videos and 109 photos of the child.

The Crown argued for a sentence of 11 to 12 years, while the Defence pushed for a seven to nine year sentence.

In the end, the father was sentenced to 10 years in prison. However, a two for one credit has been given for time served, leaving 7 years and ten months remaining.

In reaching her decision, the judge spoke about the young victim, someone who was “of a tender age…voiceless and helpless…she would have been unable to reach out for help.”

The young victim is now living with her maternal grandmother. The caregiver was in court for sentencing. She tells Global News the child is now in a loving and stable home; she does not talk about what happened to her, but is currently in therapy, and will get whatever support she needs to help her deal with the situation.

The victim’s uncle, who is the offender’s brother, is also facing several sex-related charges. His case is still before the courts.
