City preparing for rising river levels

SASKATOON – As high water flows continue on the South Saskatchewan River, the city of Saskatoon is preparing for impending flooding.

The city says the river has already risen past 2005 levels and this high flow rate has not been experienced in over a century.

The strong river current and slippery banks are making playing near the river extremely dangerous. Swimming within city limits in the South Saskatchewan River is prohibited.

Boating is highly discouraged and the public boat launch in Kiwanis Memorial Park is closed.

The city has partially activated its Emergency Operations Centre and is working the placement of barricades around core infrastructure, such as the water treatment plants.

For residents’ safety, civic crews are restricting access to low-lying areas along the riverbank where flooding is occurring.

Spadina Crescent and the Meewasin Valley Trail near Ravine Drive are closed along with the Meewasin Park North shelter.

Trails at the Mendel Art Gallery and access to the Shearwater Tours dock is also closed.

Residents are asked to avoid the riverbank after water breached the lower trail at River Landing between the Traffic Bridge and the Sid Buckwold Bridge.
