UPDATE: Calgary Zoo to close for at least two weeks

CALGARY- The Calgary Zoo will be closed for at least two weeks, after flooding washed over much of the property, prompting emergency precautions.

As many animals as possible from the zoo island and low-lying areas of the Canadian Wilds section of the zoo were secured in other areas of the zoo including all carnivores, and all 12 big cats.

Two pot-bellied pigs were moved off site to the city’s Animal Shelter. Animal care and security personnel remain at the zoo and are assessing the situation.

Two zebras were relocated to the Devonian Wildlife Conservation Centre south of the city, and all other animals remain secure at the zoo.

“To survey the island in a kayak [Friday] was a surreal experience, one I thought I’d never have and hope never to repeat,” said the zoo’s CEO Dr. Clement Lanthier, in a statement.

The zoo is currently without power to many areas, but steps are being taken to bring in generators and it is currently not causing serious issues.

The zoo will be closed for at least two weeks and the administration building, SCOW, ENMAX conservatory and Kitamba Cafe are all under several feet of water.

There have been no injuries to animals or zoo staff.
