City battles new generation of bite-aggressive mosquitoes

It’s that time of year again … the bugs are biting.

After heavy rainfall more than a week ago, the first generation of summer nuisance mosquitoes has arrived.

They’re more aggressive biters than their springtime counterparts.

While there are more mosquitoes, the city’s most recent trap count is just 15, too low for the city to implement a fogging program, but there are other tactics that can be used.

“We have started our permethrin-based program,” City of Winnipeg entomologist Taz Stuart said. “That started on the weekend, treating areas in the city, such as our parks, right-of-ways, long grass areas, where adult mosquitoes rest during the day.”

Mother Nature is lending a helping hand too. The recent dry weather is  drying up dormant water and allowing crews to get a better handle on the bug problem by spraying breeding grounds in the city.

“The next generation that may be coming off the water will be much smaller,” Stuart said. “The ones that we are currently seeing will be around for the next 10 to 14 days.”

There are some things you can do to help keep numbers down.  The most effective is to get rid of any standing water in you area.
