The Harper government announced its support for a project promoting leadership for young women and girls in francophone communities in PEI this Tuesday.

Actions Femmes Î.-P.-É Inc. is a company dedicated to improving the socio-economic conditions of girls and young women.

The project aims to help young women identify and overcome barriers, and develop their skills in public presentation and debating. The project also offers mentoring with community organizations, municipal councils and business leaders.

“Our government is committed to the advancement of women’s leadership throughout our country,” said Minister of Public Works and Government Services Rona Ambrose on Tuesday.

Actions Femmes Î.-P.-É Inc. will receive $165,000 from the government  for a two year project promoting leadership capacity among both francophone and Acadian girls and young women from the ages of 15 to 24.

“This is an excellent opportunity to work with our federal partners to encourage prosperity and leadership among girls and young women throughout the Island’s vibrant francophone population,” said PEI Minister of Community Services and Seniors Valerie Docherty.

“With this funding, we will develop strategies and action-oriented, community-based projects to address the challenges facing these girls and young women.” added Anastasia DesRoches, coordinator of Actions Femmes Î.-P.-É Inc.

The federal government has invested $2.8 million in funding to 16 projects in PEI since 2007.
