TORONTO – Toronto’s city council won’t designate a large plot of land on the University Toronto as part of the city’s cultural heritage.

The city’s vote Wednesday allows the university to continue with a $9.5-million plan to build a field hockey pitch for the 2015 Pan Am and Para Pan games on the University of Toronto’s Back Campus.

Currently, the back campus is a large, bumpy  plot of land south of Hoskin Avenue and east of St. George Street.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

In May, Toronto’s Preservation Board voted to designate the field a heritage site and city council spent much of the day Wednesday debating whether or not to accept the board’s recommendation.

The synthetic turf that’s being installed is intended strictly for field hockey but university officials say it can be used for other sports and will lead to a tripling of sports played in the area.
