Respected Newfoundland and Labrador writer Ray Guy dies at age 74

ST. JOHN’S, NL – Ray Guy, a beloved journalist and playwright known across Newfoundland and Labrador for his wit and intelligence, has died.

He was 74.

Guy, who was born in Come by Chance, NL, died Tuesday in St. John’s after spending more than 50 years penning stories, columns, plays, books and satirical essays.

He had announced his retirement in March and wrote his last column for the Northeast Avalon Times that month.

In his final piece, Guy wrote that he had “expressed just about everything at least three times before” and went on to bemoan the current media landscape.

A graduate of the journalism school at Toronto’s Ryerson University, Guy was hired by The Evening Telegram in the early 1960s and eventually starting writing a political column for the St. John’s paper.
