Diesel was an 8.5-year-old German Shepherd, who started his career with the OPP in Northern Ontario in May 2011.
Diesel transferred to southwestern Ontario May 2016 with his human counterpart, OPP Canine Constable Chris Halverson.
“He was always a hit at public displays and school presentations,” Halverson wrote in a statement from OPP.
“Diesel located a lot of good and bad people, all this for a bowl of food and a scratch behind the ear.”
The four-legged member of the police service died at home, with Halverson at his side.
Constable Max Gomez says Diesel will be missed, and that “police service dogs play an important role in public safety and community engagement.”
