Red Deer man seeks justice more than one year after being dragged from courthouse

A former Alberta Sheriff accused of using excessive force while dragging a mute man out of a Red Deer courthouse could face assault charges.

In December 2011 Bill Berry- who lost his ability to speak due to throat cancer- entered the courthouse to pay a speeding ticket. Berry accidentally entered the courthouse through an open exit door, missing the security check.

That’s when Berry says he was pulled to the ground by the sheriff and his breathing tube was knocked out in the process.

Berry says he’s still haunted by that day and wants the sheriff to be held accountable for his actions.

“I don’t even want to leave the house for fear of wanting to get some justice. Justice delayed is justice denied,” Berry wrote to Global News.

The RCMP has not recommended charges however, a judge has granted Berry permission to pursue charges of assault and aggravated assault against Sheriff Thomas Bounds.

Alberta Justice says the crown is reviewing Berry’s case.

“Mr. Berry has contacted us several times. I understand it’s before the courts and I’ll reserve comment until its conclusion,” said Solicitor General and Justice Minister Jonathan Denis. “We do believe this was an isolated, but very unfortunate incident. I have full confidence in our body of sheriffs.

Berry says he wants, and demands, justice.

Thomas Bounds’ first court appearance is scheduled for April 15.
