In 2009: Liberal cabinet minister Shirley Bond defeated NDP candidate Julie Carew by over 2000 votes, 51-38%.

History & Geography: Created in 1979, Prince George-Valemount comprises of the centre of Prince George, with borders on the east side of Highway 16 and 97. The rural part of the riding consists of the towns stretching east along Highway 5 to Valemount, and rural lands 50 kilometres or so south of Prince George. The outskirts and southern suburbs of Prince George tend to vote Liberal, while the city of Prince George itself is friendlier to the NDP.

Candidates

Liberals-Shirley Bond: The Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Bond was first elected in 2001. She has been a minister in a variety of departments, including Solicitor General, Minister of Transportation, and Minister of Advanced Education. Before being elected, she was chair of the Prince George School Board.

NDP-Sherry Ogasawara: A small business owner, Ogasawara created SO Fit Company, a nutrition and fitness consulting group. She’s a registered dietitian with the Northern Health Authority, specializing in population health. She’s also the health reporter for television’s CKPG news and has lived in Prince George for over two decades.

Conservatives-Nathan Giede: A political science student from Trinity Western University, Giede has interned in federal Minister of Immigration Jason Kenney’s office, and has held student leadership positions in university.

Christian Heritage-Donald Roberts: A health care sector worker, Roberts has run for the Libertarian, First Peoples National, Green, and Refederation parties in different provincial and federal elections in this area. He is one of two candidates for the Christian Heritage Party this election.
