History & Geography: Known as Malahat-Juan de Fuca when it was created before the 1991 election, the riding comprises the towns of Port Renfrew, Sooke, Metchosin, Langford, and the Highlands. It has gone to the NDP in four of its five elections. The Langford suburbs often support the Liberals, while Goldstream, Sooke and Metchosin are more likely to vote for the NDP.

  • Population: 52170 (57th)

  • Size: 2736 km (25th)

  • Density: 19.1 people/km (61st)

Odds and Ends: In 2005 just 7.3% of income for adult males came from government transfers, the second lowest outside Metro Vancouver.

Candidates

Liberals-Kerrie Reay: A corrections officer, Reay has worked in Community Correction offices throughout the province, and is currently a project manager for Corrections Headquarters in Victoria.

NDP-John Horgan: The NDP House Leader and Critic for Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, Horgan finished third in the NDP leadership convention in 2011. A lontime public servant, Horgan worked for the Mike Harcourt government as a policy analyst, and also started a research consulting company.

Greens-Carlos Serra: A social activist, Serra is the director of Four Corners Language Institute, an ESL school in downtown Victoria. He is also the founder Fernwood United Soccer Club in Victoria.
