New crosslights have been put in place at four locations in the Halifax Regional Municipality in hopes of reminding drivers to take caution when approaching crosswalks.

The new lights, which are part of a pilot program to test a new type of crosswalk treatment, are activated by pedestrians and placed at either end of marked crosswalks just above the crosswalk signs.

Brighter than previous models, the lights operate in a strobe pattern — also known as rectangular, rapid-flashing beacons — which is expected to make them more visible to drivers when activated, in addition to being installed lower to the ground.

The lights can be found at four intersections:

  • South Street at Wellington Street in Halifax
  • Maple Street at Dahlia Street in Dartmouth
  • Basinview Drive at Bedford Hills Road in Bedford
  • Williams Lake Road at Ravenscraig Drive in Williams Lake

In addition to asking drivers to take caution at crosswalks, pedestrians are also reminded to wait until traffic has fully stopped before they step into the street.
