Halifax Regional Police are releasing few details about an investigation into the suspicious death of an 18-year-old woman.

Police were called to the 0-100 block of Albro Lake Road around 10 p.m. on Tuesday after receiving a report of a woman being in medical distress and requiring immediate medical assistance.

The woman was transported from a pathway off Albro Lake Road to hospital where she died.

Janeta Bennett said she stepped outside of her apartment with her husband to have a cigarette when she saw a commotion.

“We just looked down the path and we could see them pumping her chest, like trying to resuscitate her.”

Shawn McGrath has lived in the area for the last 12 years. He was watching television Tuesday night when the incident happened.

“Our dog started going nuts. We were trying to get her to stop the barking and next thing we know the police were at the door, they were pounding all the doors just canvassing, seeing if anybody saw or heard anything,” he said.

McGrath lives near the path where the woman was found in distress and says it’s not the first time there’s been an incident there.

“The previous one happened a couple months back. Somebody was beaten pretty badly, thought that they were stabbed,” said McGrath.

“There’s been fires. There was a girl who was raped back there.”

Some people in the neighbourhood say they feel the path is unsafe.

“It’s a hazard,” McGrath said. “I think they should just cut off the path because everybody takes it as an opportunity to do something.”

Debbie Weeks stopped using the pathway a few months ago after she says she witnessed a stabbing.

“I’m just scared,” said Weeks. “I’m just scared going up there by myself.”

At this time, police have not released the woman’s name.

It’s expected once the Medical Examiner completes an autopsy, the cause of death will be released.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Halifax Regional Police or Crime Stoppers.
