The photo selected for the Obama family’s final official White House holiday card was snapped out of a request by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Chief White House photographer Pete Souza shared details on social media Thursday as to how the photo came to be.

“A couple of months ago, the Social Office came to me and said they were thinking of using a family photo for this year’s White House holiday card. So I thought of Justin Trudeau,” the photographer quipped in an Instagram post. “I know you’re wondering what the heck I’m talking about.”

In March, the Obamas hosted Trudeau and his delegation for an official state dinner in Washington, marking the first state dinner for a Canadian prime minister in nearly 20 years.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The photographer explained on social media that he had snapped a family photo of the Obamas in the White House residence prior to the arrival of Trudeau and his family.

“But later, when the Trudeaus arrived, the two families spent some time on the Truman Balcony with their respective delegations,” Souza wrote. “At one point, the Prime Minister asked if we could do a photo of he and his wife with the Obama family. Click, click, click. Then, he said I should do a photo of just the Obama’s.”

Being a good sport, Souza obliged Trudeau’s request.

“I could have said, ‘Sir we already did one before you arrived.’ But instead, I clicked off a few quick frames,” the photographer wrote. “And lo and behold, it was this picture that Justin Trudeau asked me to take which everyone loved as the choice for the 2016 White House holiday card.”
