WINNIPEG — A possible Saturday morning assault has resulted in a Winnipeg Police taser being stolen according to officers.

Officers are warning the public that the taser poses a risk to the general public if not used by a trained professional.

Just before 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Winnipeg Police Service said its general patrol unit was near Rorie Street and Bannatyne Avenue when they saw a large group of people fighting.While attempting to break that crowd up, officers said they found an injured man on Bannatyne Avenue and tried to help him.

According to officers, people within the crowd started to assault the officers and they weren’t able to assist. Instead, they had to take out a taser and discharge it.

“You have two individuals up against 100 people and you really hope that crowd doesn’t turn on you. In this case, unfortunately it did,” said Constable Jay Murray with the Winnipeg Police Service.

During the struggle with the crowd, the officer dropped the taser and officers said they attempted to go back to help the victim.

“Some individuals from the crowd began to actually push and punch our officers,” said Murray.

The man was taken to hospital in critical condition but has since been listed as stable now.

A warning to the public from officers as well. The taser could pose a risk if even placed in someones pocket as a build-up of static energy could activate the weapon.
