Halifax Regional Police are working to put together the pieces following an early morning shooting that left a 48-year-old man dead – Sep 1, 2016

Halifax Regional Police are investigating after a man was killed early Thursday morning on Leaman Drive in Dartmouth.

Just before 3 a.m., Thursday a man called police claiming he had been shot. The victim was located in a wooded area behind John McNeil Elementary School. He was transported by Emergency Health Services (EHS) to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Forensic identification officers were on scene looking for evidence Thursday. Police could be seen searching a garbage can in the area, combing the woods with a metal detector and going door-to -door looking for possible witnesses.

At this point, police will only say the deceased is a 48-year-old man. His name is being withheld until his next-of-kin has been notified.

An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday afternoon. Ultimately, the Medical Examiner will determine if police are dealing with a homicide. If the man’s death is determined to be a homicide, it will be the ninth one in the municipality so far this year.

Tammy Lavhey has lived on Leaman Drive for three decades and says she was woken up by her dog when she noticed police activity outside her home.

“I came outside and it’s just wall-to-wall police cars,” she tells Global News.

Lavhey says violence in the city lately is alarming, especially the most recent case, which happened in her backyard.

“It’s very frightening for me because my husband is a long haul truck driver, I’m home a lot by myself,” she says. “It’s a little eerie now this close to home.”

Last week, RCMP officers found the body of Tylor McInnis in a stolen car parked in St. Thomas Baptist Church in North Preston. So far, no arrests have been made in that case.
