KELOWNA  – It may be hard to believe but it’s already time to head back to the rink.

The Kelowna Rockets 2016 rookie camp hit the ice at Prospera Place Tuesday with 80 bright-eyed junior hockey hopefuls pushing to get noticed.

They aren’t looking to crack this year’s line-up, most are still 15 and ineligible to play a full season, but are looking to make their mark as the players of tomorrow.

“This is our future,” said Rockets director of player development Lorne Frey. “Probably half a dozen of the kids here [rookie camp] are likely to be Rockets in the next two to three years.”

“You want to leave here with them thinking of your name,” said Rockets new head coach Jason Smith. “It’s always about what you do on the ice and being evaluated and if you can make an impression.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

A rookie doing that is 2016 first round Bantam draft pick Kaedan Korczak.

The blueliner was selected by the Rockets 11th overall.

“He’s a big guy, he’s mobile, he can skate. He likes to handle the puck and be involved,” said Smith. “When you want to come out here and you’re having fun and you’re looking to be a force on the ice and be involved, you’re going to make an impression.”

All but one of the Rockets 2016 draft picks are attending rookie camp and all are expected to attend main camp.

Frey said about a half dozen other prospects will likely also make the cut to attend main camp which starts Saturday.
