5,000 Manitobans still without power after Wednesday’s storm

More than a day after a massive storm ripped through southern Manitoba, 5,000 hydro customers are still without power.

On Wednesday evening wicked winds, rain and hail caused significant damage across the southern part of Manitoba. At the height of the storm, 48,000 customers were without power across the province.

Crews have made a lot of progress in the Long Plain First Nation and Portage la Prairie, and restoration expected later today. The area was hit by a tornado Wednesday evening.

Manitoba Hydro said customers in St. Andrews and Selkirk should be with power Friday afternoon, as more of the damaged equipment has been repaired.

Hydro customers in the Whiteshell area may be out of power until Saturday. Hydro has dispatched extra crews to help restore the power, but said extensive damage and difficult access is making it harder to fix the equipment.
