They’ve been hitting the track together for the past couple of years with their local team in Calgary, the Glenmore Reservoir Dogs.

Now, Steve and Brad Recsky are leading Team Canada into action as the Men’s Roller Derby World Cup begins in Calgary, competing against 20 teams from five continents.

Steve said it’s “very cool” and “very, very special.”

It’s the latest adventure in a lifetime of doing special things together. Steve and Brad are father and son, the only such duo at the international tournament.

“Wow,” Italian player Toni Ambrosecchia said. “That’s amazing.”

Steve, 52, and Brad, 25, are both used to surprising their opponents.

“Someone comes up to me and says, ‘holy crap, I can’t believe that you’re Brad’s father,'” Steve said.

Australian player Dean Upston is impressed.

“That’s awesome, man,” Upston said. “We hope we can still be playing at that age.”

Brad always enjoys heading into action with his dad.

“(It) gets me all riled up when I see him get bashed and battered a little bit. Gets me excited to play.”

Both father and son are really looking forward to the tournament.

“The fact that it’s here – in our hometown – where we were born and raised and we’re going to have our family here, you can’t beat that,” Steve said.

The Men’s Roller Derby World Cup begins July 21 and runs through July 24 at the Acadia Recreation Complex in southeast Calgary.
