Roller derby rolls into downtown Kelowna

Kelowna’s Stuart Park underwent a makeover on Saturday as it transformed into a roller derby rink.

The Okanagan Roller Derby League held a free outdoor scrimmage in downtown Kelowna to raise public awareness about the sport.

Organizers say roller derby involves lots of skating, a hint of aggression and a dash of spontaneity.

“I think what appeals to woman is there is no age limit,” said Kaz Zvanitajs of the Okanagan Roller Derby League. “You can be any size. You can be any background. You can have various abilities and it doesn’t matter. We’re just here to have fun and skate and it’s just very inclusive.”

The league currently has more than 50 members.

It will host the Western Canada Roller Derby Championships in Kelowna from June 18 to 19.
