For the board of directors of Curling Canada, the choice of Moncton as host city, was an easy one.

“Moncton’s always been a class place to bring an event, the 4-rock rule came out of Moncton, the first cashspiel has come out of Moncton — it’s the prefect place to have it,” says board chair Ron Hutton.

Moncton Mayor Dawn Arnold, says the economic benefits will be considerable.

“The projections are about $2,000,000 to $2,500,000. Its right before the tourist season, it’s great for restaurants and hotels. The fact that it’s 18-and-under, that’s really great, it means their families are going to come with them,” said Arnold.

For the organizing committee, the chance to hold this event came after the city lost a bid to host another national event.

“We had applied for the Canadian junior championships, we were finalists with Victoria. Victoria was awarded that, but not long after we were asked by Curling Canada to host the inaugural Under 18 Curling Championships,” Jacques Robichaud, chair of the organizing committee.

“It didn’t take us long to talk amongst ourselves and Moncton city council and we got back to them rather quickly to say ‘yes.'”
