A petty thief picked the wrong time to ply his trade at a curling rink in Chilliwack.

According to Bruce Renwick of the Chilliwack Curling Club, two duffel bags were stolen from the facility during the 2016 Canadian Police Curling Championships, a competition for police and peace officers from every province and territory.

“I would say 90 per cent of the people in the building at the time were police,” Renwick said.

He said a man went into a locker room on Wednesday afternoon and left with a duffel bag from one of the members of Team Ontario. As he passed through the lobby, he grabbed a bag from Team Newfoundland in front of several off-duty officers before leaving through a side door.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

A number of off-duty officers followed him and held him for local authorities.

No word yet on whether the man will face charges.
