Brenda Campbell, 51, and John McKinnon Bendon, 61, died in the residence, shortly after a massive fire erupted around 1:40 a.m. Flames could be seen shooting out of windows on the front porch by the time firefighters had arrived.

Shortly after the fire was put out, Winnipeg Police said “evidence points to the fire being deliberately set,” and the Homicide Unit is now leading the investigation.
The fatal incident has raised questions about safety standards and living conditions in Winnipeg’s rooming houses. At the time of the fire, nine people were living in the house, along with 15 people who were inside. A rash of house fires in 2016 have occurred at multi-family residences.
