WINNIPEG — Family and friends gathered to remember 26 year old Cyril Quentin Weenusk after he was brutally killed early Tuesday morning.

Among the family and friends arriving from Oxford House, Manitoba to honour Weenusk’s memory, his four little boys. A family member even told Global News one of the boys spent much of the vigil Wednesday night touching the spot where his dad may have died.

Cyril Weenusk’s children gather at a vigil outside the MTS Centre in Winnipeg.

His cousins describe Weenusk as a cherished family member.

“He was a good guy, shy guy. His nickname was jello.” said his cousin Gary Wass.

He added, “It’s just really heartbreaking for us to hear something like that would happen, it’s just unexpected. I really hate what happened to him.”

The 26-year-old’s life was cut short early Tuesday morning, in what police call a violent attack, on Portage Avenue. Police say there was an altercation between the suspects and Weenusk, and that the victim and the suspects did not know one another.

Family members explain that Weenusk was in Winnipeg for the last couple of months and staying at the Quest Inn to be his father’s caregiver during chemo and dialysis treatment.

While his cousins said they don’t know why Weenusk was out after midnight in downtown Winnipeg, they did say he rarely left his sick father’s side.

Family members are expected to hold a service in Winnipeg Thursday night and hope to take Weenusk back home to Oxford House, Manitoba for a proper burial.
