Families in south end Halifax will soon have new playground thanks to the province’s recreation facility development program.

The municipality will receive a $30,000 grant from the province to go toward new, fully accessible playground equipment at Sir Charles Tupper School.

Officials say the two existing playgrounds at the school will be taken down and replaced.

Joachim Stroink, MLA For Halifax Chebucto, says sturdy playground equipment is essential for both schools and neighbourhoods.

“These facilities are a place where people can come together to connect and play,” said Stroink. “Simply put, investing in these facilities is an investment in our communities.”

The Nova Scotia government plans to invest $1.8 million for 65 new and upgraded facilities around the province through the recreation development program.

“We had some very generous donations from community members and of course the city has partnered with us,” added Patricia Woodbury, principal, Sir Charles Tupper School. “We are absolutely delighted to have this money come to us, to have this $30,000 from the province.”

Among the goals of the grants are helping community groups and non-profit organizations develop or increase public participation in physical activities.
