The man accused of killing young Calgary mother Jessica Newman will stand trial for second-degree murder.

Kevin Rubletz, 31, consented to stand trial last Monday, the first day of a preliminary inquiry, but Monday’s hearing still went ahead as scheduled.

Newman was Rubletz’s ex-girlfriend and the mother of his child.

She disappeared in March 2015. Eight weeks later, her body was found in a ditch northeast of Calgary.

Rubletz remains in custody, as he was denied bail last September.

The case will be back before the courts Aug. 19, when a trial date is expected to be set.
