Students compete in Manitoba unmanned aircraft system competition

WINNIPEG – University students launched unmanned aircraft systems they designed and built into the sky on Saturday, hoping to win a national competition.

Teams of students descended on Southport, Manitoba for the Unmanned Systems Canada UAV Student Competition which takes place throughout the weekend.

Saturday was the flying part of the competition which came after all the teams submitted a design paper for their projects.

The teams had to construct an unmanned aerial vehicle that they could use to identify the location, type and health of different crops.

Their UAV also had to be able to drop a sensor that could measure soil conditions that would validate the results already obtained.

A team from the University of Toronto has already won the design paper part of the competition.

The winner of the flying competition will be named on Sunday.
