Fire trucks, ambulances and an RCMP helicopter could be spotted outside Airdrie City Hall on Friday as hundreds of first responders gathered for an emergency training exercise.

According to RCMP, the purpose of the training is to test the city and local emergency response agencies’ emergency management plans. At the conclusion of the training, emergency officials will evaluate how well emergency crews performed and what could be improved.

“For the exercise to be effective, the realities of an actual emergency must be duplicated as closely as possible,” Airdrie RCMP explained in a news release. “There will be emergency personnel and vehicles on site and loud noises and sirens.”

The event began at 8 a.m. and runs until approximately 6 p.m. Airdrie City Hall will be closed for the duration of the training.

Over 200 people participated in the exercise, including members of the RCMP, Airdrie Fire Department, AHS and City of Airdrie Emergency Management Agency.

Residents are still advised to call 911 if a real emergency occurs within the City of Airdrie.

“This use of resources will not interfere with our daily police operations,” RCMP said.
