First tornado of the year touches down in Alberta

WINNIPEG — We are barely into Spring, and the first tornado of the season has touched down – in Alberta. After an investigation by the Meteorological Service of Canada, they confirmed one tornado and two dust devils on Wednesday.

Just before 4 p.m. the tornado occurred on the eastern side of Calgary near the intersection of Highway 1 and Stoney Trail. For the first tornado of the season it wasn’t very spectacular. No damage was reported and a rating of EF-0 was given. The lowest rating on the enhanced Fujita scale which is used to rate the intensity of tornadoes.

Earlier in the day just before 2 p.m. a dust devil was recorded near Balzac, while another one was spotted near Arrowwood just prior to 6 p.m.

The province of Alberta normally has fifteen tornadoes each year during the season that runs from April until September.

In the summer of 2015, Manitoba had the greatest number of tornadoes reported in Canada. At least eleven tornadoes along with waterspouts were recorded.

Many recall the tornado that touched down June 24 near Manitou that was rated an EF-2 with winds close to 200 kilometres per hour.
