The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board has voted in favour to close 17 schools at a school board meeting on Tuesday night.
The decision comes after the board started a school review process for 19 schools in Cape Breton nearly eight months ago. Of the 19 schools that were under review, only two will remain open.
Some of the schools will close as early as this coming September, while others will remain operational until 2021.
Officials say enrolment has dropped almost 50% over the last 20 years.
The school board has made a list on their website directing parents were students will be moved once the closures take effect.
