Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart said he saw a story circulating on social media Wednesday morning that didn’t really surprise him.

The story was called ‘Morgan Freeman Explains Why He’s Moving to Coquitlam, British Columbia’, but it was posted on a satire and fantasy news site.

While it had a lot of people talking, the story is not true.

Stewart had some fun with it, however.

“Doesn’t surprise me, of course, as everyone wants to live in Coquitlam,” he said in an email.

“We certainly are looking forward to Mr. Freeman’s arrival, and I’ve put his name forward to be Grand Marshall of our parade next month, helping celebrate Coquitlam’s 125th birthday!”

These celebrity hoax stories of a famous person moving to a small town in North America have been circulating since February. According to Snopes.com, the stories appeared “out of nowhere at around the same time, as if an exodus from Hollywood occurred en masse for some unstated reason.”

It is not known how the rumours were generated, but Snopes.com said it is safe to say none of the rumours are rooted in fact.

Sorry, Coquitlam!
