A crowd in Mexico City cheered on Saturday as Donald Trump’s head exploded in a shower of sparks.

It may have only been a paper effigy of the Republican Party presidential hopeful, but for the onlookers it was the high point of the traditional burning of Judas during the culmination of Holy Week celebrations.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Trump is extremely unpopular in Mexico after he said some Mexican immigrants crossing into the U.S. illegally were “rapists” and “criminals,” and pledged to build a “beautiful” wall on the Mexican border.

An effigy of U.S. President Barack Obama and one representing the Islamic State group (ISIS) were also burned.

Each year, eight districts compete to create the loudest, brightest and most elaborate effigy, or “Shimo”.

The colourful Shimos can take up to two and a half months to build, and cost up to 60-thousand pesos (3,400 US dollars), money that is donated by local residents.
