Investigation into Purcells Cove suspicious death continues

Halifax Regional Police continue to investigate a suspicious death in Purcells Cove, N.S.

Officers were called to a home on Oceanview Drive shortly before 8 a.m., on Saturday after a call came in for help.

“The phone call did come from inside that home,” said Theresa Rath, Spokesperson, Halifax Regional Police.

“It came in as an unknown trouble call, based on what was being described to us,” said Rath. “When we arrived, we did find one person deceased inside.”

Police say the death is considered suspicious but won’t say much else, including the gender or age of the deceased.

“At this point, we believe we know who the person is, but we still have to confirm the identity. We also have to identify next of kin,” said Rath.

Officers have had Oceanview Drive blocked since they arrived early Saturday morning. Police could be seen escorting nearby neighbours to and from their homes throughout the day.

One man voluntarily came with investigators for questioning. By Saturday afternoon, police confirmed he was not involved in the suspicious death.

Another man was arrested at the scene but taken directly to hospital with what police describe as ‘significant injuries.’

Officers secured the property for much of the day while they waited for a search warrant to investigate inside the home and remove the body.

Police will not say whether or not they believe the suspicious death may be a homicide.

“At this point, it’s too early to say. We have to process the scene and really understand what we have before us,” said Rath.

“Essentially, it’s a medical examiner that classifies the death as a homicide, suicide, accidental or so on.”

Police say the investigation is still in its early stages, no charges have been laid.
